X – 2023 Kanuga In-Person Attendees

Province IV DOK Fall Assembly/Retreat at Kanuga, Oct. 1-4, 2023

It is almost time for our Province IV Fall Assembly and Retreat! We are looking forward to seeing each of you who will be attending! There are a few things we know you may have some questions about and some information we want to share with you before you arrive

Our Theme for this Retreat

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

We will be concentrating on the power of the Holy Spirit during this Fall Assembly and Retreat. Our speaker, Mtr. Jean DeVaty, will be teaching on this topic and wants everyone to come to the teaching sessions with your Bible, pen, and paper. She will be giving time for application of her teaching. Come ready to learn more about the Third Person of the Trinity.

What to Bring

The weather at Kanuga will probably be warm during the day and cool off at night, so layering clothes is a good idea. Casual clothing is appropriate for all activities. Please make sure you have safe walking shoes, umbrella or rain slicker, sweater or light weight jacket, and a flashlight, in case you don’t want to use your phone as a flashlight.

Check In

Check in begins at 4:00 pm on Sunday, Oct. 1. If you arrive earlier than that, you are welcome to walk around, go into the Bookstore, etc. but rooms are not available until 4:00 pm. You will come to the main registration area for Kanuga across from the chapel. (See attached map.) We will have our own registration tables, and you will be given your folder, name tag, and may sign up for your workshops.

Walking and Golf Carts

We will be walking from place to place most of the time, but we will have 2 golf carts, if someone needs assistance.

Cottages and the Inn

Linens and towels are provided in the Cottages and the Inn. Bring your own pillow, if you have a special one you need. The cottages do a living room, porch, a small refrigerator, sink, and microwave, so you can bring a few snacks and drinks to keep in the cottage, if you wish. The Inn rooms are simple, comfortable,  hotel type rooms.

Schedule

The schedule is attached and you will notice that we have many things to do while we are at Kanuga. If you are a delegate, Province IV Assembly Meetings are required, and we hope many of you will join the Assembly meetings even if you are not a voting delegate. Part 1 and Part 2 of the Assembly Meeting will be available on Zoom to those who have registered to attend via Zoom.

Credentialing of Delegates

All delegates, participating in person or virtually, must be registered for Fall Assembly/Retreat and be current with their dues (paid Annual Dues for FY23).Those Daughters serving as Delegates will be credentialed by our registrar and credentials’ chair prior to the Province Assembly Meeting.

Election of Province IV Officers for 2024 – 2027 and election of the DAL Delegate to Triennial, 2024.

Officers are elected during the Province IV Annual Assembly meeting that is held in the year before Triennial. Officers who are elected do not begin their terms until Sept. 1, 2024. The Nominating Committee received all the nominations that were made for the different offices, and prayerfully considered all of them.  They will present a slate of officers and a DAL representative for Triennial, 2024 to the Assembly during Part 1 of the Assembly Meeting to be held on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 3:45 pm. All delegates are required to attend this meeting in person or via Zoom. Nominations may be made from the floor, but the nominating committee needs to know by Sept. 22 if you are planning to be nominated from the floor. There are procedures to follow and the nominating committee chair will give that information. Please contact Gayle Happell, Chair of the Nominating Committee, for information.    gaylehappell@gmail.com. The election is not held until Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 1:00 pm during Part 2 of the Assembly Meeting.

Banners

Diocesan Assembly Banners, and chapter banners are a part of our Assembly/Retreat at Kanuga.  Please bring your banner, and remember the pole and stand. We will have a banner procession at our Opening Eucharist on Sunday night, Oct. 1. There will be a practice in the chapel at 5:00 pm on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 1 for the Banner procession. If you are carrying your chapter banner or your Diocesan Assembly banner, you will need to attend this practice with your banner, pole and stand. The banners remain in the Chapel during our stay at Kanuga.

Fellowship

We will gather for fellowship time in the Fireplace Lounge on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings. This is a wonderful time to get to know Daughters from all over the Province! Wine will be available for purchase during fellowship time on the 3 evenings we are at Kanuga. We will have some light refreshments with the wine. We are not allowed to bring our own wine and serve it at events. We are required by food/beverage safety regulations and Kanuga policy that we purchase our wine and food from Kanuga and that a server pours the glasses of wine.

Please remember! If you plan to have wine during the fellowship time each night, you will need to bring $10.00 (cash) each evening for a glass of wine. This money will be collected in a locked box  that the Treasurer will give to an individual, who will pay for the wine and the service charge that is added. You do not tip the server because the server is being covered in the service charge your $10 a glass covers. Alcohol may not be purchased by the Province or any other part of The Order. The person responsible for the wine tab will greatly appreciate and accept your donations.

Service Project

Our service project will be to support The Storehouse in Hendersonville, NC. The Storehouse is a faith-based ministry that operates a food and hygiene pantry in Henderson County. The items they need most at this time are the following:

  • Canned Tuna
  • Jelly
  • Canned Fruit
  • Boxes of Mac and Cheese
  • Dish soap (regular size)

If you would like to contribute some or all of these items, please bring them when you come to Kanuga, and we will collect the items in containers. If you would like to write a check to help with this project, please make the check payable to Province IV DOK and write Storehouse on the memo line. To learn more about this ministry, visit their website.  www.storehouseonline.org

All of our service projects and the offerings listed are voluntary donations. Any amount is appreciated.

Offerings

We will be gathering an offering during each of our services while we are at Kanuga for Fall Assembly/Retreat. If you write a check, it needs to be made payable to Province IV – DOK, with the designation of the specific offering on the memo line

  • Christ Church, Jerusalem: Christ Church is the oldest Protestant Church building in the Middle East. There are Daughters of the King in this parish. This church serves people who live and visit in their area and spreads the love of Christ to all and works to spread the gospel to Jews and Arabs living in Jerusalem. They also do work with the poor, the homeless, and the visitors.
  • Education = Hope: Haiti continues to have many needs, especially with political unrest and natural disasters. Upper SC Daughter, Joyce Pipkin, has served with Education = Hope for many years. This organization strives to provide schools and teachers. Many of the families that Education=Hope serves have lost their homes, belongings, and their Cathedral has been destroyed as well as many of the schools. Education=Hope is in great need of funds to care for the people and to repair and build  the schools. We are fortunate to have Pere Pierre Auguste, from Haiti, with us for one day while we are at Kanuga. He has seen firsthand the important work that Education =Hope does in his country.
  •  International Daughters:  The number of International Daughters is growing rapidly all over the globe.  International Daughters are in over 20 countries. Our 2024,Triennial will be here soon, and we want countries that have Daughters to be represented. It is very expensive to cover the costs for airline tickets and everything involved with traveling to Louisville, Ky in June, 2024. The International Committee of Daughters of the King, chaired by Sue McIlrath from Central Florida, is already at work inviting representative to join us at Triennial. We learn so much from our International sisters. They have so much to teach us. This offering will go to help cover the expenses for international Daughters to come to Triennial.

Also, the following will have special boxes available all during the Assembly/Retreat to collect donations for:

  • Help Fund – A fund to help Daughters who have an emergency or critical need.
  • Staff Tips – Cash Tips are collected for the Kanuga Staff and divided among those who serve us during the Assembly/Retreat to thank them.

All of our service projects and the offerings listed are voluntary donations. Any amount is appreciated.

Photography and Worship Services

Please enjoy taking pictures during your time at Kanuga. We will have DOK Idalia Adams taking photos that may be used in historical preservation, web posts, email newsletters, DOK publications such as The Royal Cross, etc. If you do not want your picture taken, please let Kathy House know.

We ask that you respect those who are speaking and take their photos (with their permission) before or after their presentations. Also, please do not take photographs during worship services.

Workshops

You will sign-up for workshops when you check in at Kanuga for the Assembly/Retreat.

The listing for all workshops to be offered during the Assembly/Retreat, is available on the Province IV website.  https://provinceiv-dok.org  There will be signup sheets for the individual workshops in the Lobby near the front desk at Kanuga.

If you are coming to Province IV Fall Assembly and Retreat in person or virtually for the Annual meeting, we are looking forward to seeing you.  If you are not planning to attend but want to hear the talks by Mtr. Jean DeVaty, her talks will be recorded and available on the Province IV website, as soon as we can get them there. These would be wonderful for chapter or Diocesan Assembly meetings.

We are thankful for the opportunity to have Province IV Fall Assembly and Retreat at Kanuga this year. It’s our prayer that we will learn and serve together as we are led by the Holy Spirit to strengthen our commitment to the Lord through prayer, service, and evangelism.

Blessings for His sake,
Kathy House
